The Girls

I realize how many memories must have faded away as I watch my sweet grandsons grow and experience new milestones. I don’t remember cutting a tooth, my first bite of ice cream, or learning to walk.

But I do remember days and nights of fun around the holidays… I remember the Halloween I received my first costume! Caspar was my favorite! My mom walked me from door to door, reminding me to say thank you. I tried to run ahead with the big girls, but she held on tightly, promising “next year” I’d be old enough.

I also remember the years that followed chasing after my cousins as we circled the block (inside and then out, so we didn’t have to cross the street) and then dumping our candy together to choose our favorites.

Halloween opened the door to the rest of the holidays for me! My cousins, Lisa and Jilane were a little older and my best friends. We’d make plans for the next time we’d see each other at Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, as we sorted through the milky ways and pixie stix. The little girls (Kristi, Mindy and Shelley) sat by and accepted the treats we offered, always happy to be part of the fun.

Much of my childhood is a blur, but I pray I’ll always remember those cold autumn nights, running, laughing and connecting “the girls”.

The years have pulled us apart but the love is still there. I said hello to Jilane this morning during my prayers. Maybe I’ll stop by the dollar store, pick up a Caspar mask, and then give the rest of them a call.

Happy Halloween.
